“To understand the meaning of design is to sense the common thread that weaves its way through the arts of painting, architecture, and industrial and graphic design. It is also to understand the part form and content play in the intricate process of design, and realize as well that design is commentary, opinion, a point of view and a social responsibility.” - Paul Rand, Design Form and Chaos
As one of my most favorite and treasured books (mine is signed by the master himself… thank you Professor Jeana Aquadro-Crawford), Rand says it all in the last two words of this opening paragraph in his book Design, Form and Chaos — social responsibility.
For now, this is the path I am on as an artist, understanding truly that giving back through my work is an act of social responsibility, hence five of my most treasured images will be on view at the opening of Gray’s Reef Discovery Center in benefit of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
What could possibly be more important than trying to protect the ocean? There is so much to protect, respect and have utter appreciation for. My greatest inspiration seems to always be right at the waters edge, observing how these two worlds collide and work together to work the earth.
The grand opening takes place on Saturday, October 15th and features a number of events happening throughout the week, but in particular, the Soiree on Saturday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. is a ticketed event. This is where you will see the five images on display that I have presented for sale. When a piece is purchased, proceeds will be donated back to Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. Each piece is presented with the health and well-being of our oceans in mind, but also as examples of their vast beauty and wonder.
Please take a moment and plan to attend and visit the Gray’s Reef Discovery Center on its grand opening week!
