ARTS SOUTHEAST IS PLEASED TO PRESENT SAME AS IT EVER WAS,
ON DISPLAY IN THE SUPPORTER GALLERY AT SULFUR STUDIOS FROM
JANUARY 25TH – MAY 11TH, 2024
For this ARTS Southeast Supporter Call for Entry exhibition, artists were asked to take stock of where they find themselves creatively, tracing their own evolution to unpack what keeps them coming back to the studio today, and where it might lead them tomorrow. Through diverse approaches and media – including fibers, ceramics, photography, metalwork, collage, mixed media, and more – they shared signature pieces emblematic of their persistent interests. Longtime Supporter and ON::View Residency Committee member Jackie Black shares two photographs spanning three decades, with accompanying handwritten thoughts. New Supporter Oliver Smith blurs the familiar and the bizarre in his photographic collaborations with AI. Studio member Faran Riley delves into the surprising detail of her nocturnal scenes. Same as It Ever Was invites us to examine the old through the lens of the new, and vice versa.
Featured artists include: Jackie Black, Emma Camps, Tara Conway, Cat Counihan, Joseph Cowart, Joy Dunigan, Josh Gary, Jeff Hicks, Sheryl St. Germain, Joan Clare Mazzeo, Lila Miller, Melanie Mills, Faran Riley, Jess Smith and Oliver Smith.
